Police Checking Doors, Patrolling More

With campus operations suspended, police have stepped up their patrols and asked for employees’ help to keep buildings secure.

Most buildings are locked, accessible by authorized personnel only — those who are using labs and classrooms for research and remote teaching, for example. A few key buildings remain unlocked during the day.

To prevent thefts, the Police Department has doubled its routine security patrols and assigned Aggie Hosts to check exterior doors. In addition, police are working with Facilities Management on changes to locking and unlocking schedules.

AggieAccess: Key-Card Systems Will Be Retrofitted

A retrofit project will bring the new AggieAccess system to more than 160 buildings and other locations on the Davis campus.

A rough week for law enforcement concluded with police from ��ɫ��Ƶ and elsewhere rallying in a big way for Special Olympics, by raising nearly $173,000 in the Torch Run that led to the Northern California Summer Games held at ��ɫ��Ƶ.

Police, Fire Departments Present Awards

The campus Police Department recently presented UC Lifesaving Medals to four officers for a rescue at the ��ɫ��Ƶ Medical Center in April 2018.

Chief Joe Farrow and Capt. Mark Brunet, the department’s new second-in-command, presented the medals during the department’s annual Employee Recognition and Swearing-In Ceremony and Cadet Graduation.

Dispatcher: Focused Amid Tragedy

Around 6:40 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, his shift having just ended, James Bronson was about to leave the campus Police Department’s dispatch center when communications started coming in about a shooting in Davis.

“I literally had my hand on the doorknob when Amelia (Vaughan) and I overheard the word ‘shooting’ — or something similar — on the Davis police channel,” Bronson said. Vaughan and Nate Dilworth, the campus Police Department’s newest dispatchers, had just relieved Bronson and his day-shift partner, Stephen McBride.

Police Chief Matt Carmichael to Step Down

University of California, Davis, Police Chief Matt Carmichael is taking up a new position, leading the Police Department of the University of Oregon in Eugene. Carmichael officially retires from ��ɫ��Ƶ on Thursday (Sept. 1), and his first day at the University of Oregon will be Sept. 12.

Last week’s safety walk wasn’t just about ensuring the Davis campus is well lit at night. It was also about shining a light on the university as a hate-free zone.
