Campus Gets Creative to Find Student Employees

In January 2020, Celia Murillo Amezcua started as a conductor for Unitrans’ double-decker buses. And then the pandemic led to remote instruction and bus service reductions. Last May, the senior became the human resources manager for the student-run bus service. And now she is among those challenged to recruit hundreds of students to part-time jobs still vacant three weeks after the start of the fall quarter and return to in-person instruction.

Eateries Welcome Students and Employees Back

The bike circles are filling up, and so are the campus eateries.

As fall instruction begins this week, students and many employees will be on campus grabbing coffee, breakfast, lunch and more in restaurants and coffee shops operated by Dining Services and the Associated Students of ��ɫ��Ƶ — many of which are just reopening after spending months dormant.

Your Back-to-School Dining Options

As more people return to their offices, let’s not forget two other important aspects of working on campus: coffee and food! Some Dining Services facilities (including Scrubs Café) are already open and more will soon follow, while Silo restaurants and the Coffee House are set to reopen Wednesday, Sept. 22, the first day of instruction. Look for signature sandwiches, a Hawaiian-themed menu, allergen-free foods and more at various eateries.

MU, CoHo Reopening With Modifications

Just in time for the first day of fall quarter, the Memorial Union reopened this morning (Sept. 28), and the Coffee House will follow on Wednesday (Sept. 30) — both with modifications to account for the pandemic.

CoHo Closes, Scrubs Still Open for To-Go Orders

Updated 2 p.m. June 5: After lackluster response for delivery and pickup options through the website Grubhub, the Coffee House is suspending operations through the summer, hoping to reopen once students return.

“We just haven’t gotten much traction with the concept and assume that the summer won’t be any better,” said Darin Schluep, director of the CoHo. “We thought it would be best to focus our efforts on preparing for fall quarter so we can put our best foot forward if/when the students return to campus.”

Scrubs Cafe remains open for to-go orders.

CoHo Alum Takes Another Crack at ‘Top Chef’

“Chef Joe” is back! Tune in this Thursday (March 19) to cheer on ��ɫ��Ƶ alumnus Joe Sasto ’10 as he competes in the 17th season of Top Chef.

In a phone interview with Dateline ��ɫ��Ƶ, Sasto shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming “all-star” season, which brings back 15 former winners, fan-favorites and frontrunners. “Everybody’s incredibly talented,” he said. “It will make for a great competition.”

Our Coffee House: 50 Years of Home Cooking

The ASUCD Coffee House, 50 years old this year, throws itself a four-day anniversary party next week, May 14-17, with staff members wearing the styles of decades past and playing the music of those eras — all the while serving up the home cooking that ��ɫ��Ƶ has loved since 1968.

Coffee House Veteran Goes for ‘Top Chef’ Title

From the CoHo kitchen to the Final 3 of Top Chef, the hit Bravo TV cooking competition — that’s our Aggie alumnus Joe Sasto!

“People always ask restaurant people where they got their start, and I say, ‘The Coffee House,’ and they don’t get it,” Sasto said in a phone interview with Dateline ��ɫ��Ƶ today (Feb. 27). “It’s one of those things that’s so hard to describe unless you’ve been there.”

Campus to Make Switch to University-Managed Food Service

��ɫ��Ƶ is preparing for an exciting new era in campus food service, by deciding to install university management in place of longtime vendor Sodexo.

The switchover is planned during the 2016-17 academic year, but no date has been set. The change would affect residential dining, the Silo Union and other retail locations around the Davis campus, and University Catering. (The ASUCD runs the Coffee House, and that will not change.)
