Alum Martin Yan Shares Cooking Tips, Diverse Flavors

When Martin Yan arrived in Davis as an international student in 1969, the minimum wage in California was just $1.65, but he discovered teaching a ��ɫ��Ƶ extension course on Chinese cooking could yield $18 an hour. He said he implored the director: “Give me a chance to teach a course.”

Latitude Brings Global Flavor to Campus

��ɫ��Ƶ’ newest eatery has an international focus, but don’t expect pizza and chicken teriyaki. It’ll be serving Hanoi turmeric fish with dill and a staff member’s family recipe for ajiaco, a Colombian soup.

Latitude, a 500-seat dining commons with a separate retail café serving food to go, opens tomorrow (Jan. 15) on Bioletti Way south of Hutchison Drive, and will be open for lunch and dinner Mondays through Fridays.

It was a party fit for a pop star at the ��ɫ��Ƶ Comprehensive Cancer Center when cancer patient Makayla Abbe of Pine Grove (Amador County) arrived in a purple Mercedes limo and headed down the red carpet to debut her new music video, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and ��ɫ��Ƶ Children’s Hospital. The 14-year-old signed autographs and took questions from throngs of adoring fans, with paparazzi in tow, all to fulfill her wish of being a “pop star for a day.”

Scrubs Café Reopens, the Silo to Close

One campus eatery, Scrubs Café, has reopened today (June 4), while another is preparing to close for lengthy renovations.

The Silo — including Spokes Grill, Crêpe Bistro, The Gunrock and Peet’s Coffee — will be closed after Friday, June 14, the last day of finals, for construction work, some of it major (new roofing, seismic upgrades), some of it less so (new doors, epoxy flooring in the kitchen). The $2.9 million project is expected to last into early 2020.
