Linda P.B. Katehi elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

��ɫ��Ƶ Chancellor Linda P. B. Katehi is among 212 newly elected members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the world’s most prestigious honorary societies.

The academy, which was founded in 1780 by John Adams, James Bowdoin, John Hancock and others, comprises distinguished representatives from a broad range of fields. The members contribute to academy studies of science and technology policy, global security, social policy and American institutions, the humanities, and education.

Davis Team's Film to Be Screened at Sundance Festival

A 4-year-old boy's hunt for a rabbit -- filmed around small-town Davis and edited in a campus studio -- has put a ��ɫ��Ƶ graduate student and his co-director on the stage of perhaps the most prestigious film festival in the United States.

Robert Machoian, a second-year master's student, and Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck, both of Davis, will have their 10-minute film screened as an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, Jan. 21 to 31.

Research Funds Hit New High, Again Top Half-Billion Dollars

The University of California, Davis, received almost $622 million in research funds in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2009. The total is a record for the campus and the fifth consecutive year that research funds have topped a half-billion dollars.

"With these funds, ��ɫ��Ƶ researchers are creating new knowledge and translating it into products, processes and services to improve quality of life," said ��ɫ��Ƶ Chancellor Linda Katehi. "Despite the difficult budget situation, ��ɫ��Ƶ is on a steep upward curve -- doubling our research income in less than a decade."

Dante Scholar Wins $40,000 Teaching Prize

Brenda Deen Schildgen, an eminent scholar of medieval European literature and biblical studies and one of ��ɫ��Ƶ' most esteemed professors, today was named the 2008 recipient of the ��ɫ��Ƶ Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarly Achievement.

The $40,000 prize, funded by the ��ɫ��Ƶ Foundation and first awarded in 1987, is believed to be the largest undergraduate teaching prize in the nation. The winner is selected on the recommendations of faculty members, students and research peers.

Sustained by Music Through Hard Times, a Davis Family Gives Back

A Davis family with a long history of supporting music, science, Japanese-American civil rights and other humanitarian causes has donated $1 million to the ��ɫ��Ƶ Department of Music to help build a major new music recital hall. The gift, the largest in the music department's history, will support construction of a modern, 400-seat performing arts facility on the edge of campus near downtown Davis.

Due to open in 2011, the new recital hall near the corner of First and A streets is expected to become one of the most active concert venues in the Sacramento region.

Thiebaud, Neri and Wiley to Make Rare Joint Appearance
